‘Interview with a Luminary’ is an exciting project from the Young Scientist Committee! We sit down with a renowned researcher in the field of drug delivery and pick their brains on topics including what sparked their interest in their chosen field, defining moments in their careers to date and what they enjoy doing outside of the lab. They will also offer advice to those starting out on their scientific careers which we’re sure every young researcher will be interested to hear! So join us for an insight into the minds of those at the pinnacle of drug delivery research around the globe!

Our chosen researcher this time is Prof. David Brayden, from University College Dublin (UCD). Prof. Brayden is Full Professor of Advanced Drug Delivery at the School of Veterinary Medicine and a Fellow of the UCD Conway Institute. Following a PhD in Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge, UK (1989), and a post-doctoral research fellowship at Stanford University, CA (1991), he set up Elan Corporation's pharmacology laboratory in Dublin (1991), where he became a senior scientist and project manager of several drug delivery research collaborations with US biotech companies. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 research publications and patents, serving on the Editorial Advisory Boards of several drug delivery and pharmaceutics journals.

His involvement in the CRS community included serving as Chairman of the UK-Ireland Chapter of the Controlled Release Society (2003-2006), Co-Chair of the Veterinary Programmes at the CRS international conferences (2003-2006), and as member of the CRS Board of Scientific Advisors (2006-2009) and the CRS Annual Meeting Programme Committee (2015, 2016). His major research interests are in oral peptide delivery and nanomedicines, with participation in several European consortia in this field. This interview will be sure to let you know a bit more about Prof. Brayden and his career journey!
